Those of you who don't reside in New York may have a storybook image of the city when it snows in your imagination. You'd be partially correct. Yes, seeing the city streets buried with snow when you wake up and gaze out your window or walk your dog is simply amazing. And if you've ever been out for dinner on a chilly evening when the snow starts to fall, you'll understand what I mean when I say that the peaceful, quiet car trip home after you've finished your last hot toddy is like something out of a movie.
However, there is one aspect of snowstorms in New York that only true New Yorkers can relate to: the post-storm melt fest. It's sloppy, sludgy, filthy, and ripe for a twisted ankle. Even so, there's something magical about the first snow of the season, which this year fell on the first Friday morning of the year. We were there to observe what New Yorkers were lugging about as they faced the cold. A stroll across Central Park and the Upper East Side revealed a plethora of Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and other high-end brands.
